Speech Therapy Services
Speech initial intake may include evaluation of the 5 language domains: phonology, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics.
Phonology—study of the speech sound system of a language, including the rules for combining and using phonemes. Phonemes are the smallest units of speech that we use to distinguish one word from another.
Morphology—study of the rules that govern how morphemes, the minimal meaningful units of language, are used in a language.
Syntax—the rules that pertain to the ways in which words can be combined to form sentences in a language.
Semantics—the meaning of words and combinations of words in a language.
Pragmatics—the rules associated with the use of language in conversation and broader social situations.
Delays can occur in one or more of these areas which can impact higher language skill, reading development, writing development and social communication with peers. These can be addressed through individualized therapy and goals based on the initial evaluation and assessment from the SLP and parent as a team.
