What you can do to help your child develop visual perceptual skills-
The best way to work on developing skills with children is through play! Instead of sitting your child down to work on worksheets, you can do the following:
Play at the park! Climbing, running and jumping around helps children integrate visual information with motor movements. Obstacle courses also help with these activities.
Play board games! Board games with dice, spinners and cards help children to recognize the steps and plan their motor movements after they process the visual information. Not only is it fun for them, but they get to use you as a model of what to do.
Play I-Spy while you wait or sit around! Scanning their environment helps develop visual perceptual skills because children have to find what they are looking for and ignore the rest of what they are seeing. You can start with finding colors then working up to more complex things.
Drawing! Practice completing drawings and copying drawings! Take turns with your child to draw and copy drawings.
Prewriting skill development-
Skill development happens in noticeable steps for children. Just like your child learned to crawl before they walked, they need to develop strong hand muscles, visual motor skills, and a regulated sensory system before they can write. Before writing, your child needs to develop certain prewriting skills.
